Tunes Cloud Service Delayed

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Sources told CNet that if ‘in the cloud’ music features from Apple are released in the next few months, they will probably be “modest in scope,” rather than more robust offerings as previously rumored.

As most of Best Cloud Server readers know, huge speculation about the possibility of an iTunes streaming service has been rumoring around the web for the past year. There have even been huge rumors and people going on the record saying http://www.myservice.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/itunes_cloud1.jpgoutlandish things.  In January, one music industry veteran went on record saying that an upcoming version of iTunes would make users’ iTunes libraries “available from any browser or net connected ipod/touch/tablet.”  Though we don’t know if this is true, it would be amazing and I certainly think it’s very possible.

Although CNet claims that causes for the delay remain unclear, licensing issues and personnel changes may be a large part of the problem. According to the report, Apple “still hasn’t obtained the licenses needed to store or distribute music from the cloud.”  I think that is going to be their problem for the rest of time.  Licensing issues are always going to be coming up.  They haven’t even talked about cloud server security yet.  That’s a road that we’ll have to conquer another day.

Billion Dollar Cloud Data Center

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Yes, you heard that correct.  There is a billion dollar cloud data center being built right now!  And this huge data center should be completed by the end of the year according to Peter Oppenheimer.

During Apple’s Q3 2010 earnings call, CFO Peter Oppenheimer fielded a question about the massive data center Apple is currently building in Maiden, North Carolina. The reporter wanted to know how it was coming, and if there were any updates? “It’s on-schedule,” Oppenheimer quickly said. “We expect it completed by the end of the calendar year,” he continued, noting that it should be fully operational after that.

In a statement about the cloud server facility Apple said: “The facility will provide Apple with a major East Coast infrastructure hub to support its iTune music store and iPhone app store.” But again, this thing is something like 500,000 square feet. That’s about five times the size of Apple’s other regional data centers. Instead, might this be the central hub of Apple’s often-rumored iTunes-in-the-cloud offering?

This Apple cloud data center is huge.  They have said it’s mainly for mobleme but I’m not buying it.  Look at how massive it is in comparison with other data centers across the world.  Do you think this will be the central hub for Apple cloud computing?  Here is a video of the massive rumored Apple cloud data center.

Apple Set To Move To The Cloud

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Apple is reportedly set to move to cloud computing in order to expand its media content offerings.  Apple cloud computing technology is geared towards enabling its customers to stream media content while on the go, it has been reported.

Citing sources close to the heart of the technology giant, the website Boy Genius has revealed that the firm is looking to offer a cloud-based version of its popular iTunes application. The site expanded: “Any apps you buy, for instance, on your iPhone will immediately sync to your computer.  “Changes to your calendar, or notes of contacts, will also automatically update on your computer as well.”
