Microsoft knows that the future of computing is in the cloud server, and released a paper today that would address some negatives of the cloud computing revolution and turn them into positives. The paper starts out pointing out the similarities between today’s common furnace and water heater to a modern day data server. All three devices are large metal boxes that give off a lot of heat, and Microsoft argues that we can use that heat to warm up our buildings. By using energy that is already going to be used to heat a building, it would negate the power consumption of the data server.

We need to heat buildings in the winter, and we need cloud servers. Microsoft uses the example of an office building that could host its cloud servers in the basement. Having the dedicated data center so close to its users would increase performance, and reduce the building’s carbon footprint. Currently computer servers consume three percent of our nation’s energy, and heating houses consumes six percent.  If Microsoft can change those numbers around, and remove the energy used solely to power a “Data Furnace,” then the whole world would benefit.

Cloud server storage and sharing application Box.net is changing the rules with an upgrade to its free and paid plans today. They are increasing the data storage limits for its personal, business, and enterprise plans.

Box’s current subscription plan come with 5GB of free web storage. Box’s business plan is being changed so that companies don’t pay by the individual user (businesses were given 15GB per users previously). Now businesses will automatically receive 500GB of data storage, tripling the amount of storage the average business subscriber has access to. Enterprise customers will have access to an unlimited amount of data storage,, says Box.net’s CEO Aaron Levie, allowing companies to manage terabytes of data in the cloud (Box charges enterprise customers $35 per user per month).

Dell announced the PowerEdge C6105 rack-mount server, which can accommodate up to 48 processor cores in a 2U box. The server can create large clusters to run scientific or math applications, and can also scale performance in densely packed cloud-computing environments, company officials said.

The server will run on Advanced Micro Devices’ Opteron 4000-series processors, and includes four two-socket motherboards, with each socket accommodating processors with up to six cores. The server is a complementary offering to Dell’s existing PowerEdge C6100 scale-out rack server, which runs on Intel’s Xeon processors.
