100,000 Android Applications Submitted

Friday, July 30th, 2010

As many of you know I am an iPhone nut.  I always buy the newest Apple products the day they come out (iPad, iPhone, Magic Mouse, MacBook Pro, etc).  That being said, I usually keep up on other product gossip to. It’s just fun for me to do.  I found it amazing that AndroLib says there aren’t 100,000 applications available in the Android store. There have, however, 100,000 apps been submitted to Android Market since its public debut, the site wagered this morning, up from approximately 5,000 in June 2009.

That’s pretty amazing for a phone that hasn’t been around for very long and has HUGE competitors out there.  Last week Google shared in its latest earnings call that more than 70,000 in total in the app store that had been approved and downloaded several million times.

What does this mean for the cloud hosting world?  Well, it’s also HUGE.  Cloud applications are becoming the new craze.  People download more apps then they go to the grocery store.  Hosting these applications in a cost saving environment is extreemly important to the thousands of developers out there.  I don’t care what platform you are working on. Cloud applications is a big part of the future of phones.  Are you on board or not?

Yanks Obsessed with Cloud Apps

Monday, July 26th, 2010

The U.K. government has spent tens of thousands of pounds developing iPhone applications, according to a recent news article. Specifically, the  Brits are spending between 10,000 and 40,000 pounds per application, and they’re aimed at citizens and should improve the way they get information from the government. For example, the U.K. government, otherwise known as Whitehall, is creating such projects as a travel advice application and a jobseekers’ app for the Foreign Office.  Also, there’s one called a “Quit Smoking” app and a “Drink Tracking” app — both costing around 10,000 pounds each.

These cloud apps help spread the good word and doing their part to bring savings and efficiencies to Brit taxpayers by increased use of the cloud.

All Things Digital’s D8 Tech Conference

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer was asked who their main competitors right now? According to him:

  • Google (cloud apps)
  • Apple (building cloud data center)
  • Oracle (cloud hosting software)
  • VMware (cloud server everything)
  • open source (Linux, Firefox) (cloud server everything)

As you can see, I filled in where some are excelling in cloud computing. That’s what he said during All Things Digital’s D8 tech conference earlier today . Ballmer and Microsoft’s chief software architect, Ray Ozzie, sat down with ATD co-editor Walt Mossberg on the second day of the confab in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.
