HostingCon 2010 Final Stop: The Dell Booth

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Yesterday was the final day at HostingCon 2010 in Texas. Above is a photo of us at the Dell booth at HostingCon 2010. We had a wonderful chat with some of the most brilliant minds at Dell.  It’s amazing what Dell has accomplished in the past couple years.  We have established a relationship over the past year as a Certified Dell Vendor and a Dell Storage Enterprise Partner.  In other words, we love Dell.

Andy Rhodes was the keynote on Tuesday.  This was one of our favorite keynotes we have ever been to.  Andy serves as the Director of Global Marketing of Data Center Solutions (DCS) at Dell, Inc. The DCS division is responsible for providing customized infrastructure (server & storage) solutions to the world’s largest scaled out datacenter environments, often referred to as Cloud computing centers. Customers include Microsoft (Azure) and Facebook as well as many Chinese Web2.0 companies. His organization is responsible for strategy, product planning, product management and go to market messaging.

It was a great speech to say the least.  Andy presented a list of lessons Dell has learned over the past few years. “They were buying and deploying devices on a scale never seen before,” Rhodes said, noting that it forced Dell to re-examine some of its ideas on IT services.

One of the main points in his speech was that each business will have a unique TCO model. “Your TCO model will depend on processes,  everyone starts from different starting points,” Rhodes said. Rhodes’ next point is that forward-looking businesses aren’t satisfied with the status quo. “There’s been a massive change in infrastructure” going from large servers to blades, and now we’ve in the age of shared infrastructure and cloud computing, he said. These companies have had to deal with an accelerated pace of change. Not adapting soon enough, and delays in rolling out solutions can, therefore, cost companies dearly. “An enemy of progress is the status quo.”]

His final point I loved: Instead of talking about the term cloud, they should talk to their customers about real pain points and how to solve them. “Get away from that word, it’s not a valuable marketing commodity… customers want to know what it can do for their business.”

GREAT SPEECH, it really hit home with us at Best Cloud Server.  We had a chance to speak with him later and talked about all the unique pain points that Dell is helping cloud hosting providers with.  They help with building unique servers that fit the special requirements that we all have.  They can help build a server specific to your cloud server needs and requirements.

Microsoft Opening Software and Services Excellence Center

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Steven Guggenheimer, Corporate Vice President of the original equipment manufacturer division at Microsoft Corporation today announced the opening of the Microsoft Software and Services Excellence Center (SSEC).

The main purpose of the center is to advance the potential of cloud computing across devices, in the data center and within new industries-all topics Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, addressed when he visited Taiwan last year. Via the Microsoft SSEC, Microsoft combines its R&D expertise and technology leadership in software, services and cloud datacenter technologies with Taiwan’s global leadership in hardware innovation in order to create next- generation connected devices and cloud data centers, creating new business opportunities for Microsoft and its partners. Moreover, Microsoft will license patents from its industry-leading portfolio and share its software development expertise with academic and R&D institutes in Taiwan to help strengthen the software and services technologies for the Taiwan Information and Communication Technology (ICT) ecosystem.

“Over the past two decades, hardware manufacturers in Taiwan have established their global leadership in PCs, netbooks, cell phones, LCDs, and other IT technologies, which is important for the global ICT industry,” said Steven Guggenheimer, who helped celebrate the center’s opening. “The opening of the SSEC is a significant milestone for Microsoft and its hardware partners in our collaboration for the development of additional business opportunities in the era of cloud computing.”

“Cloud computing services are a strategic industry that the government is promoting, and the Microsoft Software and Service Excellent Center will expedite the development of the Taiwan ICT industry towards cloud services,” said Wu Ming-Ji, Director General, Department of Industrial Technology, Ministry of Economic Affairs. “The Taiwan ICT industry will be able to bring in the most advanced software technologies as well as cloud data center implementation experience from Microsoft to integrate them with the existing system and R&D resources provided by the government. This will not only strengthen the existing competitiveness of the Taiwan hardware industry but also develop new business opportunities from cloud services. We believe that the integration of existing government resources with innovations provided by Microsoft is going

Acquia and Rackspace Join Forces, The Next Cloud Power

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Acquia will provide Enterprise-class Drupal support, remote administration and global training for Rackspace, and Rackspace will serve as a partner to Acquia for Enterprise hosting services.

“The traction that Drupal has made in the enterprise market has been tremendous and joining forces with Acquia to extend our offering to the Drupal customers we already support was a natural fit,” said John Engates, Rackspace CTO. “This partnership presents a great opportunity to further drive Drupal’s reach within large organizations and we’re excited to be working with Acquia to make that happen.”

Acquia will be offering a few new options that incorporate Rackspace’s cloud hosting and managed hosting services in addition to its current cloud offerings with Acquia hosting.  This will make them an even bigger powerhouse in the cloud hosting world.

“Rackspace has a goal to provide Fanatical Support to its customers and Acquia shares that customer service focus,” said Tim Bertrand, Vice President of Business Development for Acquia. “Our relationship with Rackspace extends our enterprise hosting capabilities and offerings to an even larger base of enterprises.”
