Azure Cloud Server Now With More Control!

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Microsoft unleashed a raft of features for its Azure cloud service this week, bringing it several degrees closer to a true cloud infrastructure service. New features, announced in beta, include remote desktop viewing for Azure “roles” (or virtual machines), full support for Internet Information Services (IIS) roles, the ability to create and maintain customized virtual machines (VMs) in Azure and a host of other services.

“We’ll see if it works,” said Chris Bardon, chief software architect at Toronto-based ComputerTalk, a unified communications and automated voice interaction software maker. Bardon said he thought Microsoft was walking a tightrope between letting users mess around on their own versus delivering a headache-free service people would actually pay for.

Azure Cloud Server Appeals To VARs

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Microsoft announced the Windows Azure cloud computing appliance at this week’s Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) in Washington, D.C. The first iteration of Azure in a box, as some are now calling the appliance, is meant for large companies that aren’t comfortable putting data in a public cloud. But it will be more useful to VARs once it’s scaled down for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

“Over time, we will make it both bigger and smaller,” Bob Muglia, president of Microsoft’s server and tools business, said at the WPC. Microsoft says that there are currently 10,000 customers using Azure, according to SearchITChannel.com. Microsoft did not give details on pricing or a release date for the Azure cloud computing appliance at the WPC.

Windows Azure Cloud Enhancements

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Dell, HP, and Fujitsu will all be developing and selling Windows Azure platform appliances in the next couple months. Initially, the companies will be selling services hosted from their own data centers; this will then be expanded to include private sale and hosting of platform appliances. Dell hopes to have appliances running within its own data centers by January, and expects to be selling the systems to third parties within 12 months.

The latest company to switch to the Windows Azure cloud server is eBay.  eBay uses Windows Azure hosting for its iPad listings, an early pilot deployment to prove the viability of the platform. eBay plans to expand this, first using Windows Azure appliances to host internal business applications, and ultimately hosting all business operations on a privately owned Windows Azure-powered cloud.  The cloud platform appliance will be an all-in-one combination of server hardware, networking infrastructure, storage, and software allowing large companies to create private clouds.
