Tilera & Quanta Now With 512-Core Cloud Server

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

SeaMicro two weeks ago announced a 512 Intel Atom cloud server.  Well, fellow start up Tilera and ODM Quanta are launching their own 512-core offering based on Tilera’s 64-core Pro64 chip. Tilera also announced plans to double the core count every two years starting with a 100-core processor in 2011 and a 200-core chip in 2013.

Tilera is trying to meet the demand of businesses deploying cloud computing or Web-based IT infrastructures, communications companies and HPC (high-performance computing) systems vendors, who all are trying to find ways of increasing the performance of their massive server farms while driving down power, cooling and floor space costs.

“It’s creating pretty much of a pinch,” Troy Bailey, vice president of marketing at Tilera, said in an interview, referring to the problems facing companies running lots of servers. “I think it’s pretty clear that getting IT the power [for their IT infrastructure], cooling it and getting the floor space are important.”

Industry analysts have called the move to cloud computing a transformative time for the industry, and that such times offer opportunities for new companies to make their mark.

LSI Launches Family of Configurable Storage Components

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

LSI Corporation introduced the CTS2600 family of configurable storage components, offering white box channel partners a quick, efficient and cost-effective approach to build, customize, brand and sell a wide range of external storage system configurations. The unique approach using configurable components is designed to provide channel partners with the flexibility to assemble complete systems to their customers’ specifications without the need for costly stocking of pre-configured systems.

“The introduction of the CTS2600 family is a significant milestone on our mission to be the most trusted and comprehensive storage building block supplier to the channel,” said Brent Blanchard, director of worldwide channel sales and marketing, LSI. “The CTS2600 family complements our existing channel portfolio and provides partners with one-stop shopping for delivering both direct-attached and external storage solutions to vertical market segments such as managed hosting, cloud, medical applications and digital content.”

The CTS2600 family will deliver systems with 6Gb/s SAS back-end drive connects and offers multi-protocol host connectivity, mixed drive support, simplified management and low power consumption. Multi-protocol host connectivity includes 6Gb/s SAS and 1Gb/s iSCSI or 6Gb/s SAS and 8Gb/s Fibre Channel (FC) interface options. The multi-protocol host connectivity delivers support for a wide variety of implementations, from low-cost rack-integrated solutions and single-room data centers using SAS, to SAN environments utilizing iSCSI or FC for larger consolidation and virtualization projects.

“Colfax International offers a broad spectrum of high-performance computing solutions, all of them completely customizable to meet our customers’ unique requirements,” said Gautam Shah, CEO, Colfax International. “The addition of configurable external storage building blocks to the LSI channel portfolio is well aligned with our business model and will enable us to deliver low-cost, high-performance storage solutions that can quickly and efficiently meet customers’ changing mission-critical demands.”

Akamai Not Going to Compete With Amazon or Rackspace

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Cloud hosting is huge right now, and Akamai is looking to capitalize on that growth by providing differentiated services based on its distributed network architecture. While it does offer optimization for cloud-based services, CEO Paul Sagan said that the provider would not seek to compete against Amazon and Rackspace to provide the same sort of bare metal, infrastructure-as-a-service cloud offerings that they sell.

Akamai CEO Paul Sagan will be speaking at this week’s Structure conference. In a Q&A ahead of the conference, we asked Sagan about how Akamai defines its cloud services, why cloud optimization is important and how companies that provide cloud services can overcome questions about security or network outages. To learn more, and to see Sagan’s fireside chat with Om on Thursday, join us for Structure 2010, June 23 and 24 in San Francisco.
