Cyber Monday has become the most widely known Internet shopping day of the holiday season, even though it is not the busiest one. Dec. 15, the last day most retailers can guarantee shipment before Christmas, was the busiest in 2009 with $913 million in sales, according to digital marketing firm comScore Inc. in Reston, Va..

Last year it was the second-biggest online sales day of last year’s holiday season with $887 million in transactions, according to comScore. More than 106 million people are expected to shop online today, compared with 96.5 million last year, according to the National Retail Federation. Some media predictions have today’s sales hitting $1 billion.

In the hosting world there are some great deals going on today at NetHosting.  Y0u have to call their sales team to get the discount but they are offering HUGe discounts.  Tell them Best Cloud Server sent you to them and get an extra 10% off for a year.

Over the past couple years we have heard that the cloud is the future of productivity and savings for everyone.  Today, Google is launching a brand new plugin for Microsoft Office called Cloud Connect.  Cloud Connect will tie Google Docs directly into the ubiquitous productivity suite, free of charge.

Editing a document in Word? It’ll automatically sync to your Google Docs account each time you hit ‘Save’. Want to share a preview of your document without worrying about what file format your coworkers can open? Just send them a link to the Google Docs file. The plugin supports Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and it’s a big deal for Google’s strategy with Docs. The new product is going live for Apps for Business customers today as part of a preview program (sign up here); everyone else will get it soon.

Hyper-V Cloud

http://news.cnet.com/i/bto/20081027/Windows_Azure_610x406.jpgMicrosoft announced that the Hyper-V Cloud has a new group of tools designed for businesses that are looking to generate their own Windows Server-based private cloud infrastructures.

This is one of a few private cloud initiatives Microsoft has announced within the past year, following the launch of Windows Azure Platform Appliance.

It’s kinda cool. Microsoft’s new Windows Azure platform lets service providers and large customers operate the Azure development and hosting platform as a private cloud from their own data centers so that developers are able to create new applications which they can run in the cloud.

Now users can choose from 70 global service providers that offer hosted versions of Microsoft-based infrastructures.  I wonder how this will change the cloud hosting world that we live in?  Would love to hear from all of you different comments on how you think this will change the world?

EMC Buys Isilon

EMC has just acquired Isilon Systems for $2.25 billion in cash or approximately $33.85 per share. We have been hearing about this for some time but now it is official!  So what will happen with Isilon Systems now?  We use the Isilos storage for our cloud hosting storage platform.  Will we still be able to get our storage platform from Isilon?

Isilon is know for its “Scale-out NAS” storage systems.  This offers customers a scalable but low-cost storage infrastructure for managing a ton of data.  Clients who need Isilon’s data storage capabilities are typically very large storage clients like datacenters.

Spoon, a supplier of cloud hosting technology innovations, claimed to have introduced the world’s first free cloud hosting service for desktop applications.

Officials with Spoon said that it allows software developers to make their existing desktop applications available in the cloud, with no installs. Spoon applications can be accessed from the Spoon.net library or embedded into any website, blog, or social media service as a “Spoon Feed” with a single line of HTML.

Company officials said that Spoon has partnered with leading software developers and publishers such as Autodesk and SourceForge to provide free web-based access to their desktop application portfolios.

CloudPronto has released a new service called MyCloudSite. MyCloudSite is similar to shared hosting — a hosting service where several websites reside on a single web server connected to the Internet — except in the cloud. Traditional shared hosting services rely on traditional dedicated servers.

MyCloudSite takes the shared hosting concept to the next level by offering you all the benefits of the cloud at a discounted rate. MyCloudSite offers the same enhanced reliability and affordability guarantees as ServerPronto — in the cloud.

Amazon vs Rackspace

Posted on 9th November 2010 by cloudhostingguy in Cloud Hosting

The cloud is advantageous for many reasons and both Rackspace/Mosso and Amazon offer cloud storage solutions.  We are frequently asked to compare Cloud Files enabled with Limelight’s CDN with S3 and CloudFront.  Many of the questions we are asked revolve around cost and performance (particularly CDN).  These are very quantifiable metrics.

Cost

Both Amazon and Rackspace/Mosso offer cloud storage calculators, but they are a bit simplified and a head to head comparison is non-trivial.  To make that simpler, we put together an Excel-based calculator that quantifies the total cost of the two solutions including things like request fees, origin fetch bandwidth, etc.  Below we show the results of several common cloud storage scenarios but the calculator is available here (served up via Cloud Files and Limelight) so you can run your own cost comparison.

Before we dive into the numbers, I’d like to comment on one significant differentiator between Cloud Files and S3 – and that is support.  We think our storage service is more than just a commodity like electricity.  Cloud Files houses YOUR data, YOUR applications, and in some cases, YOUR business.  Rackspace has been hosting customers for ten years now, and we know how valuable support (the fanatical kind, is there any other?) is when considering handing over stewardship of your data.  We take that very, very seriously here and believe you shouldn’t have to pay to talk to a human to find out what’s going on with your data.  That’s why support is INCLUDED with Cloud Files.  We are here 24/7 to answer any of your questions or help you out.

Now don’t get us wrong, price is incredibly important too!  That’s why we’ve worked hard to design and offer a cloud storage solution that is exceedingly affordable.  We also leverage the scale of Rackspace as much as possible to reduce our prices and pass them on to you.

In the below scenarios, I list S3/CloudFront pricing both with and without Gold level support.  In most cases, the Cloud Files/Limelight pricing is the same or better than S3/CloudFront pricing even without support (ranging from -3.7% to 17.4% savings), but in ALL cases, the Cloud Files/Limelight pricing is cheaper with support (ranging from 15.8% to 52.9% savings).  In short, with Rackspace/Mosso, you get more for roughly the same or less money!

, , , ,

Hello,

It’s my pleasure to inform you that the merger of The Planet® and SoftLayer® is complete! There will soon be public announcements about the merger, but I’d like to talk with you firsthand about the new opportunities and capabilities that it brings.

I’ll call you in the next few days to answer any questions you might have—there’s been plenty of speculation and I want you to hear about the exciting road ahead directly from me.

We highly value your business and trust, and have worked hard to create a seamless transition. Your The Planet accounts and services remain unchanged. Rest assured, the new SoftLayer is committed to the same world-class support and personal service you received as a customer of The Planet.

SoftLayer is already recognized for its automation and commitment to innovative product development. But now, you’ll receive new capabilities with increased value. You’ll have direct access and control of your solutions through our industry-leading Customer Portal and open API. This will allow you to order, deploy and manage your entire environment on-demand, without the need for human interaction.

Our goal is to provide the best hosting experience in the business and we want you to see it firsthand.

The new SoftLayer provides:

- An expanded product line, with new products and services not available to you before.
- Industry-leading automation, Customer Portal, and Open API, for direct access to more than 150 backend systems and activities.
- Increased geographic diversity and the ability to choose where your servers reside.
- High-speed network and multiple PoPs, providing more than 1,500G of connectivity and direct connections for lower latency.
- Exclusive network architecture that weaves together distinct Public, Private and Data Center-to-Data Center networks.
- Improved Service Level Agreement with 100% uptime and 2-hour or less hardware replacement (failure or upgrade) guaranteed.
- Greater value for your business, including more performance per dollar, a larger international presence and expanded partnerships with industry leaders.

Your existing The Planet services and account are managed and accessed as they were before through Orbit and the Managed Hosting Portal. But beginning next week, you can also access the SoftLayer Customer Portal with your The Planet username and password.

Until this information is made public, please consider it confidential. I’ll send you a note this week to schedule some time for a discussion that’s convenient for you.

The Planet and SoftLayer, both giants in the world of dedicated server and Web hosting services, have merged. The news of the merger, which has been subject of rumors and speculation for months now, was confirmed in a (confidential) email that was sent out by The Planet earlier this morning. In the email, the company says that the news will be made public “soon”.
