Heat Your Building With Cloud Servers

Monday, August 1st, 2011

Microsoft knows that the future of computing is in the cloud server, and released a paper today that would address some negatives of the cloud computing revolution and turn them into positives. The paper starts out pointing out the similarities between today’s common furnace and water heater to a modern day data server. All three devices are large metal boxes that give off a lot of heat, and Microsoft argues that we can use that heat to warm up our buildings. By using energy that is already going to be used to heat a building, it would negate the power consumption of the data server.

We need to heat buildings in the winter, and we need cloud servers. Microsoft uses the example of an office building that could host its cloud servers in the basement. Having the dedicated data center so close to its users would increase performance, and reduce the building’s carbon footprint. Currently computer servers consume three percent of our nation’s energy, and heating houses consumes six percent.  If Microsoft can change those numbers around, and remove the energy used solely to power a “Data Furnace,” then the whole world would benefit.

You can read the rest of the article here.  What do you think of this?  All they really talk about are cloud server furnaces to heat buildingsand not about cloud server and how we are to cool them in the summer.  That would be a heating nightmare!

CX Buys FileDen To Try And Lead Cloud Hosting Race

Monday, July 25th, 2011

CX, cloud Server and SaaS data file management system, has raised $5 million in new funding from Eric Schmidt’s Tomorrow Ventures and Hanna Capital. This brings the company’s total funding to $10 million. CX, which has flown under the radar despite the company’s launch earlier this year, is also announcing that it has acquired fellow cloud-based file storage company FileDen. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed we are told the deal was a mixture of stock and cash.

Funny story about FileDen was BestCloudServer was in the race to buy them.  We made several offers but in the end what we were offering was not big enough to win the site over these guys.  Congratulations Cloud Experience (CX).

License Mobility for Amazon Microsoft Deal

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Amazon Web Services (AWS Reviews) announced last week that the Microsoft “license mobility with Software Assurance” (SA) program applies to AWS cloud server services.

That means that organizations with Microsoft volume licensing and SA agreements in place have a little more flexibility on how to use Microsoft application server products that were originally licensed for on-premises use. In many cases, organizations can transfer those licenses into a hosting company’s public cloud, including leveraging AWS’ infrastructure-as-a-service offerings to run applications as services, without incurring additional licensing costs.

Amazon claimed in its announcement that companies with volume licensing and SA agreements in place have been upgrading to the cloud using Microsoft’s mobility licensing option. For instance, they may move from using SharePoint 2007 on premises to using SharePoint 2010 on the AWS cloud.
