The Planet Joins Linux Foundation

Monday, April 19th, 2010

The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth of Linux.  Today The Linux Foundation announced The Planet as its newest member. The Planet is a global leader in IT hosting and will participate in community initiatives and projects that support enterprise Linux.  The Planet is also growing in the cloud hosting arena to compete with larger IT cloud providers such as Rackspace and Amazon Ec2.

“Our new Server Cloud, which is in beta with more than 500 customers, has been developed on the KVM hypervisor included in the Linux kernel,” said Duke Skarda, vice president of IT and Software Development for The Planet. “KVM is the future of Linux-based server virtualization. As we continue to evolve and enhance the platform, our goal is to access the Linux development community to gain vision and insights on emerging technologies. More than 80 percent of our 20,000 customers and partners rely on Linux platforms to manage their hosting operations, so our membership directly supports their work.”

Acquia and Rackspace Join Forces, The Next Cloud Power

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Acquia will provide Enterprise-class Drupal support, remote administration and global training for Rackspace, and Rackspace will serve as a partner to Acquia for Enterprise hosting services.

“The traction that Drupal has made in the enterprise market has been tremendous and joining forces with Acquia to extend our offering to the Drupal customers we already support was a natural fit,” said John Engates, Rackspace CTO. “This partnership presents a great opportunity to further drive Drupal’s reach within large organizations and we’re excited to be working with Acquia to make that happen.”

Acquia will be offering a few new options that incorporate Rackspace’s cloud hosting and managed hosting services in addition to its current cloud offerings with Acquia hosting.  This will make them an even bigger powerhouse in the cloud hosting world.

“Rackspace has a goal to provide Fanatical Support to its customers and Acquia shares that customer service focus,” said Tim Bertrand, Vice President of Business Development for Acquia. “Our relationship with Rackspace extends our enterprise hosting capabilities and offerings to an even larger base of enterprises.”

Volcanic Ash May Impact Iceland’s Data Center Plans

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Iceland says its cool climate and abundant supply of geothermal and hydroelectric energy makes it a prime spot for IT data centers.  But a cloud hosting data center may want to think twice about planting their data center so close to a volcano.

Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted for the first time in nearly 200 years on Monday, sending ash nearly 40,000 feet into the air and shutting down heavily traveled air routes in northern Europe and Scandinavia.

“It’s unclear if the ash fall is affecting Iceland’s IT infrastructure, as Channelweb.com’s attempts Thursday to contact Icelandic solution providers were unsuccessful. But according to one local news report, the ash fall is the largest Iceland has seen since an eruption in 1918, and scientists aren’t ruling out the possibility that the volcano could keep erupting.”

Data centers are constructed to withstand most environmental extremes and natural disasters, but volcanic ash is known for its ability to wreak havoc on all different types of desktops, servers, and basically any type of IT infrastructure that has moving parts.  This could be catastrophic to all the new cloud servers and hybrid servers that are coming into the market.  I guess we’re going to have to keep our Icelandic data center plans on the back burner!

“Iceland is the only country in Western Europe that still has extensive, untapped resources of competitively priced hydroelectric power and geothermal energy. It is the only western country that produces all its electricity from emission-free, sustainable natural resources,” according to the organization’s Web site.
