Build Your Own Cloud

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Softlayer’s launched a“Build Your Own Cloud” (BYOC) platform, a new addition to its CloudLayer family of cloud services, which lets customers create customized cloud servers to gain greater application performance, cost efficiency, and availability. Customers can also choose to pay on an on-demand or monthly basis.

“Build Your Own Cloud exemplifies our vision for giving customers control over every aspect of their computing environment,” SoftLayer chief technology officer Nathan Day said in a statement. “We are leading the industry with this level of customization for cloud computing. It brings to market the advantages of a cloud server with the opportunity to tailor system architecture and design like you would a dedicated server.”

The BYOC platform lets users customize CPU, RAM, and storage configurations. There are no fixed resource packages, BYOC increases flexibility for scaling or modifying solutions, and provides simple, easy-to-use ordering through the Web or via a client portal.

It will let you configure 1 to 16 CPU cores and 1 to 16 GB of RAM.  The starting price for a base configuration is $0.10 per hour or $70 per month. Monthly plans include 2,000 GB of bandwidth. SoftLayer provides an online price calculator to quickly determine on-demand and monthly rates for any given configuration.
