WPC 2010 Updates for Cloud Hosting Providers

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

WPC 2010 Updates for Cloud Hosting Providers.   Microsoft re-newed its commitment to helping cloud service providers deliver cloud services through its software, services and programs, which enable them to become trusted advisers and full-service IT providers to businesses.

Highlighted so far has been this statement; “Microsoft sees service providers becoming more important as the cloud becomes more predominant,” Microsoft communications sector worldwide hosting general manager John Zanni said in a statement. “Given their experience in deploying and selling infrastructure and software as a service, businesses will depend on them for IT as a service. The next step for service providers is to look beyond their current hosted offerings to become full-service IT providers and trusted advisors to businesses.”

They have been talking a lot about how managed hosting provider nGenX was able to work with the Dynamic Data Center Toolkit (Microsoft cloud hosting software) and NetApp to include enterprise-class disaster recovery in its automated cloud service, Guardian GeoCloud.  “A major concern of cloud computing among our customers is reliability, as downtime or lost data translates to lost revenue, a damaged reputation and halted productivity,” said Robert A. Bye, executive vice president at nGenX. “By integrating disaster recovery into Guardian GeoCloud, we are able to achieve the reliability that our customers demand, providing replication and failover of their virtualized environments to a remote datacenter. Moreover, our customers now have access to a level of disaster recovery and security traditionally only available to large enterprises, at a fraction of the cost.”

NetApp With New Storage Management Integration

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

NetApp has added new storage management integration for greater performance and scalability of VMware vSphere environments. The new NetApp Virtual Storage Console will enable customers to centrally manage all NetApp cloud storage for VMware environments directly from the VMware vCenter Server console and fully leverage the benefits of virtualized infrastructures.

“Virtualization of the server and storage infrastructure is reshaping today’s data center as customers begin laying the foundation for cloud computing,” VMware global strategic alliances vice president Gary Green said in a statement. “The integration between VMware vCenter Server and Virtual Storage Console further demonstrates how the VMware and NetApp partnership benefits our customers by providing enhanced visibility and management for greater productivity, response time, and overall return on investment.”

How One Cloud Computing Customer Got Burned

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

One of FireHost’s recently acquired customers, LawLeaf, a web-based financial services company that finds loans for people trying to finance the cost of lawsuits they’re filing, left its previous web hosting vendor, BlueHost, after an attack that almost put LawLeaf out of business.

LawLeaf Managing Director Tim Burke says he started the company in 2007 “with nickels” as a sideline to his main job selling member-management software to non-profit companies. He originally chose BlueHost to house LawLeaf.com because of awards the hosting company had won and because of its flat $6.95/month service plan. Burke says that he had been “pretty happy” with BlueHost’s service until LawLeaf.com started to go down at the beginning of the year.

In January, LawLeaf.com was hit with a SQL injection attack that compromised the PHP code that generates many of its pages. The infection caused the site to crash frequently and, worse, force-downloaded malware on unsuspecting users. By February, the site was crashing twice a week. By March it crashed ever day, Burke says.
