NetHosting Receives Type II SAS 70 Certification

Web Host NewsOrem, UT - NetHosting, a global provider of Cloud, Dedicated, VPS Server, and Virtual hosting products, today announced that it has received SAS 70 Type II certification through independent service auditor, The Cadence Group, after an extended audit of its internal processes.

“We want our customers to be assured of our consistent and dedicated pursuit of security in our data centers,” stated NetHosting CEO, Lane Livingston. “So we’ve taken our Type I certification to the next level by becoming SAS 70 Type II certified.”

SAS 70 certification became a market standard after the Sarbanes Oxley act of 2002. While the audit required for Type I certification takes a snapshot of a company’s adherence to its policies at a given point in time, Type II certification is largely recognized as the more valuable analysis of a company’s security-oriented protocols because the audit takes an in-depth look at its internal operations over a much longer time span.

A report issued by The Cadence Group details the controls NetHosting has implemented to safeguard user data throughout the processing of any given transaction and certifies that NetHosting’s facilities are fully compliant with SAS 70 Type II protocols. This report is available upon request.

“With our Type II certification, we’ve done the footwork for those customers that also must obtain SAS 70 certification,” said Mr. Livingston. “As a service provider, having the appropriate certifications is critical for our customers to qualify for their own certifications. Maintaining SAS 70 and PCI compliance takes a huge burden off of our customers and adds tremendous value to our hosting services.

“In fact, an enhancement to the SAS 70 model has recently entered the market, called SSAE 16, and NetHosting is already in the works to receive certification in the form of a SOC 1 report. We also have plans for SOC levels 2 and 3, which have more stringent criteria for security policies and procedures.”

In addition to SAS 70 Type II certification, NetHosting received PCI compliance in April of 2009, establishing itself as the first PCI compliant data center in Utah and one of the first in the world to be added to the credit card industry’s list of approved service providers.

CX, cloud Server and SaaS data file management system, has raised $5 million in new funding from Eric Schmidt’s Tomorrow Ventures and Hanna Capital. This brings the company’s total funding to $10 million. CX, which has flown under the radar despite the company’s launch earlier this year, is also announcing that it has acquired fellow cloud-based file storage company FileDen. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed we are told the deal was a mixture of stock and cash.

Funny story about FileDen was BestCloudServer was in the race to buy them.  We made several offers but in the end what we were offering was not big enough to win the site over these guys.  Congratulations Cloud Experience (CX).

cx

CX allows users to backup, synchronize, share, and manage  their data in the cloud, from any device to any device, across multiple platforms, including desktops,  laptops, netbooks, and mobile devices.  CX will sync new, changed, offline, or deleted files to all connected computers and devices and maintains a history as you make changes. Other features include realtime backup, the ability to share a single set of synchronized files with a group of people, and more.

License Mobility for Amazon Microsoft Deal

Amazon Web Services (AWS Reviews) announced last week that the Microsoft “license mobility with Software Assurance” (SA) program applies to AWS cloud server services.

That means that organizations with Microsoft volume licensing and SA agreements in place have a little more flexibility on how to use Microsoft application server products that were originally licensed for on-premises use. In many cases, organizations can transfer those licenses into a hosting company’s public cloud, including leveraging AWS’ infrastructure-as-a-service offerings to run applications as services, without incurring additional licensing costs.

Amazon claimed in its announcement that companies with volume licensing and SA agreements in place have been upgrading to the cloud using Microsoft’s mobility licensing option. For instance, they may move from using SharePoint 2007 on premises to using SharePoint 2010 on the AWS cloud.

SoftLayer, the innovation leader in Cloud Hosting, Dedicated Hosting, and Managed hosting, today announced the introduction of High-Availability Dedicated Firewalls to its lineup of security solutions. SoftLayer customers have the option of adding this high level of protection as a new service for current or new Cloud, Dedicated, or Virtual systems that share the same VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network).

“High-Availability Dedicated Firewalls provide our customers with greater peace of mind,” said Matt Chilek, Vice President of Systems Development and Technology at SoftLayer. “Unfortunately, malicious network activity can happen to anyone, so we’re dedicated to providing our customers with the best protection possible so they can focus on their business and not worry about the security of their infrastructure.”

High-Availability Dedicated Firewalls go beyond protecting servers from malicious activity. The service includes a secondary physical firewall for failover protection, and automatic fall back when the primary firewall regains service.  This helps your cloud server to be better protected.

CNN Log-In Wall

For those of you that don’t know, CNN is now broadcasting 24 hours a day online and on mobile apps for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch LIVE. The live streams are available for both CNN proper and Headline News, but good luck finding them. They are definitely not front and center.

To watch LIVE CNN videos, you need to click on the “Live” tab. Now you will have to use the new “unlock to watch” feature by entering your info. Click on that and then it asks for your cable company user ID from Verizon, Cox, Comcast, and the like. If you are like me, you will probably have to dig that out. I think it’s pretty lame that they’d do that to all of us but I guess it shows what this world is coming too. The world is all going behind a pay-wall of information.

Hopefully they will see their rankings go down and switch back to the old way but I don’t see this happening in the near future.  I wonder how this will affect CNN’s cloud servers.  Think they’ll see less traffic coming to them?  What do you think?

Cloud Hosting +

With all the talk about Google +, I wanted to write a post about Cloud Hosting Plus.  What does it take to make a real network that helps people connect with other cloud hosting people?  Cloud Hosting Plus would be a networking site that helps connect to cloud hosting providers in their local area and find out all the dirt about them.

You could have the ability to share different things with different people. Cloud Hosting Circles shares the right stuff with the right people. Cloud Hosting Circles makes it easy to put your friends from Saturday night in one circle, your parents in another, and your boss in a circle by himself – just like real life.  Yes, I stole that from Google Circles page, I think it would be pretty funny if someone went and copied their site and applied it to cloud hosting.

Find out more info about Google Plus here.

Amazon Cloud Drive Starting at $20/year

Today, Amazon is announced a few nifty enhancements to its cloud-based music locker, including storage plans that offer unlimited space for music, free storage for MP3 purchases, and Cloud Player has finally come to the iPad. If you remember that Amazon before Apple, or Google or any other large cloud server player was the first to get into the cloud music space.

The Cloud Drive and Cloud Player will cost, at the very least, $20 a year, which should be a very reasonable price for unlimited cloud music storage space. This offer is available starting at the lowest price grade, $20/year, which includes 20 GB of file storage and unlimited space for MP3s and AAC music files only.  No other files will be allowed on the server for the $20/year cost.

For the iPad, Amazon says that the Cloud Player for the Web has been “optimized to offer customers streaming playback of their Cloud Drive music using Safari”. Those interested in checking it out, can go here to learn more.

CEA says the full line-up of 2012 International CES keynote addresses will be announced in coming months.  Ballmer will be speaking at 6:30 PM on Monday January 9, 2011.  Hope to be able to see you all there.  We will be attending if any of you are wanting to meet up and discuss cloud hosting or just grab a drink!

Apple Cloud Server Hackers

Anonymous, the hacker group which is some of the best hacks out there like PayPal, MasterCard and Visa, in support of whistleblower website Wikileaks has now broken into an Apple cloud server. The group confessed that it had hacked into an Apple server used for technical online surveys on twitter. It tweeted: “Apple cloud be a target, too. But don’t worry we are busy elsewhere”.

Apple is considered by the majority of people out there the holy-grail of hacking as it has one of the most robust systems in the world. The timing of the attack is also significant as Apple recently announced the arrival of its cloud storage facility, the iCloud. The cloud locker facility allows users to store music, apps, documents and calendar on the cloud. The success of the offering depends on user’s willingness to move their data to Apple servers. The current hack can raise questions about the security of iCloud.

It’s crazy that so many hackers would be able to unite and hack into a cloud server infrastructure like Apple.  What are you thoughts on this?
