MICHAEL GARRY and Cloud Computing

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Food retailing may soon be entering  “the cloud” or cloud computing for cost savings.  Retailers are beginning to discover the huge cost savings for their online websites when they move over to the cloud.  They can scale instantly for demand at the touch of a button.  This creates huge cost savings for all the many cloud hosting retailers.

Michael Garry stated: “The cloud in this case is the Internet, which is increasingly becoming a source of not only software applications but also computing platforms and processing. The virtual world of cloud computing is taking over some of the traditional physical world of bulky machines, enabling retailers to not only reduce hardware and software investment but also improve services to customers, employees and vendors.”

Terremark enters the Cloud Computing Arena

Monday, April 19th, 2010

“There’s not one enterprise today that doesn’t have a cloud strategy,” said Terremark Chairman and CEO Manuel D. “Manny” Medina.  He later gave one example: If a retailer’s website needs to handle more customers for December, it doesn’t need to buy and install more server computers just to handle that temporary high load of visitors. The computers are expensive, and they wouldn’t be running at full capacity all year, so it would be a waste.

Enter the cloud.

That retailer who uses cloud computing doesn’t need to buy more computers when companies like Terremark treat data storage like a utility. Just like when you need more power or more water, it’ll always be there. You’ll just get charged at the end of the month for using more.
